What's on this week?
- Simon Day - What A Fool Believes (19:45 Sunday, 16th Nov)
Simon Day first started in stand up comedy in 1990, winning the time out new act of the year award in 1991. He rose to prominence in The Fast Show also touring extensively performing his many characters; this tour will be his first solo stand up tour ever, with no wigs hats, or comedy glasses. He will attempt to explain what it is like to be a clown, hero, genius, loser and true artist in one show. Don't miss it! "The maverick conscience of The Fast Show." N.M.E - Buika (19:30 Sunday, 16th Nov)
Buika's passionate and exhilarating performances quickly convert audiences to her boundless view of life and music. Since 2006 she has become established as Spain's leading and most original young interpreter of coplas - Spain's emotive songs that communicate straight from the heart. Her music is an elated mix of flamenco, jazz and Cuban soul, as well as her own Afro-Spanish heritage. Buika's throaty vocals cut deep then reach higher, a testament to her unbounded approach to music and her life. Buika can swing, scat and dance her way through a freestyle Latin jazz improvisation, then sit perfectly still for an intimate and enrapturing a capella flamenco ballad. "All Buika needed was her voice to summon the music's complex past, its possibilities and, above all, its passionate immediacy." New York Times - The Iliad (19:30 Sunday, 16th Nov)
An extraordinary account of the testosterone-charged energy of war, with its savagery and mad ecstasy. It explores questions of nationalism, of grief, of divine indifference, human frailty and the destructive and redemptive faces of love. Daniel Morden and Hugh Lupton will also be performing The Odyssey on Monday 17th November. These compulsive performances by two of Britain's leading storytellers are true to the momentum of a rattling good tale with wry humour and poetic reflection. "These two men had to do no more than tap into the ancient power of the spoken word to hold an entire audience in their thrall." The Times - La Zona (15) (16:00 Sunday, 16th Nov)
Dir: Rodrigo Pla Mexico 2007 97mins subtitled Cast: Daniel Tovar, Maribel Verdu Pla's feature debut is a taut social thriller that brutally reveals the dangers of growing polarisation between have and have-nots. 'The Zone' is a wealthy, guarded and gated estate in Mexico City. When three teens from the slums on the other side of the wall break into the compound, they soon discover that privilege equals power and that inhabitants of 'The Zone' only uphold its own laws. Miguel manages to escape further into the neighbourhood where he encounters Alejandro, a local rich boy of a similar age. A bond develops between the two boys that forces Alejandro to question his picture-perfect community and his father, a prominent and respected figure in La Zona. - Gomorrah (15) (19:30 Sunday, 16th Nov)
Dir: Matteo Garrone Italy 2008 135mins subtitled Cast: Toni Servillo, Gianfelice Imparato Winner of Grand Prize of the Festival at Cannes. Power, money and blood: these are the 'values' that the residents of the Province of Naples and Caserta have to face every day. They hardly ever have a choice and are almost always forced to obey the rules of the 'system', the Camorra. Only a lucky few can even think of leading a 'normal' life. Five stories are woven together, set in a cruel and apparently imaginary world, but one which is deeply rooted in reality.

The story of Odysseus' ten year journey from Troy describes the systematic stripping away of a hero's wealth and warrior bravado until, at last, he returns home "alone, unknown and under a strange sail". Daniel Morden and Hugh Lupton will also be performing The Iliad on Sunday 16th November. These compulsive performances by two of Britain's leading storytellers are true to the momentum of a rattling good tale with wry humour and poetic reflection. Over the past 10 years Peepolykus have won fans worldwide with their hilarious collision of verbal surprises and visual ingenuity. Now, following their acclaimed West End hit, The Hound of the Baskervilles, they're turning their hand to Oscar Wilde. Or are they? Come with an open mind and wear a disguise. "If they weren't so funny they'd be locked up." Time Out"Peepolykus are unfailingly hilarious." The Guardian - Sakuran (15) (18:30 Tuesday, 18th Nov)
Dir: Mika Ninagawa Japan 2006 111mins Cast: Anna Tsuchiya, Kippei Shina, Hiroki Narimiya The anti-Memoirs of a Geisha, Sakuran is a luscious visual treat and directorial debut from Japanese photographer Mika Ninagawa. The tale of bad-girl courtesan Kiyoha, with a wonderfully oddball score of jazz, electro and Japanese pop and lavish costumes to boot, this film excels as a warm-hearted and original tale. Sold to a brothel as a young girl, Kiyoha rises through the ranks, first as a House Girl and then to a much in-demand courtesan, which incurs the wrath and jealousy of the Head Geisha. After a tragic accident, Kiyoha herself becomes Head Geisha, but her foul mouth and rebellious ways remain. Will she find love with lowly tradesman Sojiro? Or will she choose the life of wealth and leisure offered to her by Lord Mitsunobu? - Rebellion: The Litvinenko Affair (15) (19:00 Tuesday, 18th Nov)
