Greenville, SC – Jackie Dickert, Greenville Middle Academy school nurse, was recently named South Carolina LPN School Nurse of the Year by SC DHEC and the State Department of Education.
Ms. Dickert was chosen for the award because she provides excellent health care in all components of school health. She follows up on the health concerns of her students and assures that care for the chronically ill student is always administered safely by trained staff when a nurse is not available.
Recognizing the need to educate students about health issues, Ms. Dickert teaches hand washing and cough precautions to all special education students. She is careful to remain compliant with all district policies and state laws concerning her scope of practice.
Ms. Dickert keeps current on health practice issues by attending district nursing in-service offerings and completing on-line CEU programs. She is a certified Asthma Educator with the American Lung Association and is Epipen certified.
In addition, Ms. Dickert serves her school as the girls’ soccer coach, as coordinator of the Emergency Response Team, and serves on the DHEC Disaster Preparedness Team.
She spends her summers as a camp nurse for children with high functioning Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome and is an active member of the Association of Camp Nurses.

Greenville, SC – High School Health Educator Kathy Kent was named 2008 Health Education Professional of the Year (K-12 Level) by the South Carolina Association for the Advancement of Health Education.
Ms. Kent serves Greenville County Schools as a High School Health Educator and ADEPT evaluator. She also serves the South Carolina State Department of Education as a member Health and Safety Academic Standards Revisions and Writing Team and the Health Education Assessment Program.
Ms. Kent has taught health education for 6 years at Roper Mountain Science Center and 1 year at Bryson Middle School. She also integrated health education while teaching physical education for 11 years at Simpsonville Elementary School at Morton Place. She also coached of the Simpsonville Skippers, a State Jump Rope for Heart (JRFH) Demonstration Team, and the school’s Unicycle Club.
She is a member of the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education Recreation and Dance and the South Carolina Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, the South Carolina Association of Physical Education and Sports, and the South Carolina Association of the Advancement for Health Education.
Ms. Kent has been the recipient of several grants at the local, state, and national levels including grants from the Greenville County Alliance for Quality Education, the Heart Institute, the South Carolina Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness, and the 2005 National JRFH/HFH Joint Projects.
Ms. Kent has been a health curriculum writer for the Greenville County Schools and served on the Greenville County School District’s Sexuality Education Advisory Committee. She worked as a content evaluator for McGraw-Hill Publishers and served on their National Health Advisory Board.
Kathy earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana, and her Master of Education degree from the University of Cincinnati.

Applications Considered on a First-Come, First-Served Basis
Greenville, SC – Greenville County Schools, the State leader in school choice with 8,700 students (13%) attending school on choice, is accepting requests for change in school assignment beginning Tuesday, December 2 through Friday, January 9. Space is limited and requests are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis if space is available at the requested school.
Parents wishing to enroll their child in a school other than their assigned school should go to the requested school to complete a request form. Guidelines used when reviewing requests for change in school assignment include individual grade and school facility capacity, student enrollment projections, and residential growth potential in the attendance area.
A second request for change in school assignment period will be January 20, 2009.
Student assignment letters for the 2009-10 school year will be distributed to students in April. If the request is approved, the assignment letter will reflect the requested school. If the request is not approved, the assignment letter will indicate the child’s homebased school. Parents with children attending school through a change in school assignment request must provide transportation. Also, a change in school assignment may affect athletic eligibility.
Change in school assignment requests must be submitted each year. Parents who wish to RENEW their child’s assignment exception will receive a renewal form that will be sent home with eligible students in December. The renewal request should be returned to the principal of the child’s current school by Wednesday, December 10, 2008. Acceptance or denial of renewal requests will be reflected in the student assignment letters distributed to students in April.
