Sure, it's autumn but that's no reason to mourn your flower garden. It's time to start spring planting. "You can have blooms as early as February," said Heather Blackmore, a master gardener with the University of Illinois Extension Service.

Joliet man lets his pottery bloom
During last year's cold winter, "peaceful potter" Joe Hadamik of Joliet flipped through a mail order flower catalogue and fashioned a chrysanthemum out of clay. He brought it into the house and showed it to his wife, Chris. "She said, 'Where do you come up with this stuff?'"

It's getting spookier around every Joliet corner. Grab your favorite costume for a different and scary take on the haunted house. The Joliet Area Historical Museum, 204 N. Ottawa St., will be transformed into an unnatural history museum tonight.

Parishioners reflect on St. Bernard's history
Sue Fransechini, 70, of Joliet, has been reminiscing quite a bit lately. As co-coordinator with Mike Pollaro, of Joliet, for St. Bernard Catholic Church's 50th anniversary celebration, Fransechini has been poring through past memorabilia, seeking old photographs for a memory wall and historical information for a commemorative booklet.

1911: St. Bernard was founded by the Rev. W. J. McNamee, then pastor of St. Mary Church, downtown Joliet, to fulfill the needs of a growing Catholic population in Ridgewood. Until the church building was complete, services were held at A.O. Marshall School. -
Retreat in Morris to help women rejuvenate
Last year around this time, 17 women gathered in Morris for "me time," taking time out of their busy lives to pamper themselves. The women were participating in the first Innerpeace Natural Health Care women's retreat. The second one will take place this weekend. -

Criminals do not want to meet Amber. She is such a vital and reliable member of the police force that criminals can almost never hide from her. Amber is the bloodhound at the Joliet Police Department, and she is handled by officer Darren Prochaska. Amber and Prochaska train together a number of times each year. And, since bloodhounds train only to search for people, her training is very specific.
