I am up 2 pounds up this week and my waist went down another 1/2 inch. (total: 156 pounds, 29" waist)The only way I can explain this one is this way - please tell me if I am right: Am I gaining muscle, hence the increase in weight and decrease in waist? Please help Dr. Mike - what else can I do to see the scale mimic gravity? I need to number to drop down!CarolineAre you WEIGHTing for your weight and waist loss to decrease at a synchronized pace? Rather than swimming toward a very distant shore, celebrate the small victories as they come, because the ½ inch gone doesnt necessarily mean youll be dropping pounds, and thats OK.While a few too many cookies can send the scale for a ride, it takes time for inches to build around to waist. And that means that the pounds wont shed at the same speed as the inches, either. Although watching your weight is undeniably important, pounds dont only come in the form of fat. The new YOU may be slim, trim, and loaded with muscle, which could be the reason that your scale isnt agreeing with your mirror.Dont get discouraged! If youre waist is on its way downhill and your pants are bagging at the knees, safely attribute the added pounds to the strength youve built since beginning the YOU Diet. How you feel is far more important than what you weigh, so muster up that patience and watch your beautiful body make heads turn once again.Believe it or not, both Michael Jordan and LeBron James were/are technically overweight at the middle of their play-off runs if you compare their weights to their heights. And Id bet that most people would agree that theyre in pretty good shape. Some have said that MJ is getting a little extra around the middle, although Id never tell him face to face ( or in my case, face to waist ). So dont beat yourself up over a few pounds; smile at your waist loss, embrace your newfound energy, and just wait for your weight to fall into place.Congratulations to Caroline on yet another ½ inch lost. Although shes up two pounds this week, she is now down to a 29-inch waist for the first time since age 29, which is more than enough reason to celebrate. To Suzanne, whos up only two pounds and ½ inch after three weeks away, as opposed to her usual five pounds, keep working at it! If you stay ultra-disciplined for the next few weeks, youll be ready to pick up where you left off in no time. Good luck!Remember that the goal is to make YOU the healthiest you can be, so measure your success in the days you look and feel great! Watch out- Id bet theyre more common than you think.DR MIKE R OF THE YOUDOCS
- 7 23 07 BLOG of Dr Mike (Roizen) related to YOU and RealAge: Don't play it safe!!!7 23 07 BLOG of Dr Mike (Roizen) related to YOU and RealAgeIs the treadmill putting you to sleep? It may be time to change that daily stroll to an activity that helps you forget youre even exercising.Just like your brains reaction to a boring and repetitive lecture, youre body, too, needs change to feel excited. Instead of opting for the safe steps around the block, hit your daily 10,000 through other forms of exercise. The summer, especially, is the perfect time to take advantage of the great outdoors and choose the scenic route to waist and weight loss.Alternatives for exercise can be anything that you personally enjoy. For some, the ideal day of fitness may be filled with a trek through the woods followed by a long bike ride with a friend, while others may need an hour of yoga or Pilates to hit the spot. And yet for some still, particularly those past-athletes out there, digging up the ol dribble and passing skills may do just the trick. Whatever you choose, dont let your vacation from an activity discourage you. Remember that old habits die hard, so its likely that youre three-point shot and golf game are in just the shape you left them.Surprise yourself with how much your energy level has changed. With your dedication to health and fitness, behaviors that used to leave you huffing and puffing may now be attainable with solely a smile. If nothing else, this diversion from the beaten path could open your eyes to how much your body has transformed, not just externally, but internally, as well. Treat yourself to a pat on the back: its your turn to be proud of your own physical accomplishments.Congratulations to Caroline for being a step ahead and embodying this very concept in her weekend away. Although her cravings managed to get the best of her, a consistent 15,000 steps per day helped keep her weight and waist regulated throughout the week, and with the help of the YOU-turn, shell be back to whole grains and greens in no time. And to top it all off, tree walking and zip lining are just two of the adventures Caroline encountered while away. You, too, may find yourself able and willing to participate in sports you never thought possible. This week, wed also like to welcome Suzannes daughter to the team. Theres no better way to push yourself than to share the YOU Diet and Workout plan with someone you love, so two thumbs up to Suzanne for carrying out our mission statement: Give yourself a do-over and then teach others to do the same.So dont play it safe. See if pushing yourself to give your body the same break in monotony you crave everyday will be as much fun for you as it is for me. The results may surprise you even more than your score.DR MIKE R OF THE YOUDOCS

But no one said that success was easy. With the smells of barbeque creeping through the backyard, a healthy diet can be a chore to maintain, and hitting 10,000 steps in sweltering heat isnt so appealing either. But rather than looking at the summer as a downer, realize that the challenge is all the more reason to show the world what youre made o
