The city paid a local Toyota dealer $25,770 each for the cars, which were built at Toyota's Kentucky plant.

The GYM Concept Car includes a single-seat cockpit surrounded by a lightweight injection-molded magnesium alloy chassis and built-in exercise machines.

  • ChinaFlagGreenCars-400x267.jpgChina, whose big cities often are choked by smog so dense it is hard to see through, is taking aggressive steps to push its people into cleaner, more fuel-efficient cars - even as it continues to build carbon-belching, coal-fired power plants.

In what Chinese officials see as both an environmental and economic move, the national government is considering reducing or abolishing a purchase tax on new cars while at the same time providing subsidies to consumers who buy low emission, fuel-efficient vehicles.

"The adjustment on taxation could be one of the most effective measures to boost vehicle sales if the [economic] slowdown continues," Dong Jianping, deputy secretary general of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers mb_concept_bluezero_1.jpgMercedes-Benz will unveil a small family of BlueZero electric-drive concept vehicles at next month's 2009 Detroit Auto Show, and the official images of one of them have already been leaked on several German Web sites.

The least complicated of the three concepts is the BlueZero E-Cell, a pure-electric plug-in model featuring a 100-kilowatt motor with 236 pound-feet of torque and a lithium-ion battery pack. The range is said to be just over 60 miles on a two-hour charge.

An extended-range companion is the BlueZero E-Cell Plus, a gas-electric hybrid that adds a turbocharged three-cylinder engine from the Smart stable as an onboard generator to boost range to nearly 375 miles.

The third model is the BlueZero F-Cell, which uses a hydrogen fuel cell to deliver 136 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, with zero emissions.
