- YORK HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN FINANCIAL LITERACY CHALLENGE
In November, students enrolled in business classes competed in the U.S. Department of Treasury's National Financial Literacy Challenge. Nationally, over 75,000 students competed in the challenge. Thirteen York High School students scored in the top 25th percentile in the challenge. They are Eric Boykin, Katie Clements, Ashleigh Creech, Stephen Doolittle, Joohyung Kim, Billy Maines, Haley Maskell, Jennifer Morrow, Lauren ONeal, Julia Rodney, Scott Tyree, Megan Vandegrift and Jaewoo Yi.
- GINGERBREAD PROJECT AT MAGRUDER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Kindergarten classes at Magruder Elementary School in York County have put their skills to work this season to create gingerbread houses. Students researched and planned to create the houses. Houses were sent to various places for display, with one going to the Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg.
- YORKTOWN MIDDLE AND THE YORK CONVALESCENT CENTER JOIN FORCES
Students in Yorktown Middle Schools Middle Years Programme and the sixth grade chorus brought their holiday cheer to the residents at the York Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center on Friday, December 12. Students sang favorite holiday songs and brought smiles to all. Following the performance, students distributed gifts to the residents that were donated by the entire falcon family as part of the Yorktown Middle School Adopt-A-Grandparent program.
- GRAFTON BETHEL STUDENTS ATTEND HOLIDAY SHOP
Grafton Bethel Elementary School students were treated to a night of shopping, singing and award giving one evening in December. Holiday shop was an opportunity for students to purchase items for family and friends. The same night, the Grafton Bethel chorus performed a holiday medley that encouraged everything from self awareness to enjoying and appreciating the holiday season.
- MOUNT VERNON CHORUS PARTICIPATES IN YORKTOWN TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY
Students in the Mount Vernon Chorus performed during the Yorktown Tree Lighting Ceremony.
- YORKTOWN ELEMENTARY HORTICULTURE CLUB MAKES HOLIDAY WREATHS
The Yorktown Elementary Horticulture Club made holiday wreaths and swags for the entire faculty and staff. The aroma of the evergreens filled the room as third, fourth, and fifth graders decorated and added their finishing touches.
- INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION BETWEEN YMS AND YHS
York High School Spanish students presented information on holidays across the world to Yorktown Middle Spanish students on December 16, 2008 in the YMS auditorium. The York High students, including several students from the International Baccalaureate Programme, researched different countries, made their presentations in Spanish, and then quizzed middle school students on what they had heard. The exercise pushed all students to apply their Spanish and to explore a variety of cultures.
- COOKIE DRIVE AT BETHEL MANOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Earlier this month students at Bethel Manor Elementary School baked more than 40 dozen cookies for airmen living at the dormitories on Langley Air Force Base who will not be able to go home for the holidays.
- BRUTON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT NAMED TO VIRGINIA STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Abigail Moul, a senior at Bruton High School, has been selected to serve on the Virginia Board of Educations 2008-09 Student Advisory Committee. Eight high school and four middle school students were selected to serve on the committee. The groups first meeting was held on December 11 in Richmond and they identified online learning; the role of foreign language and technology instruction in preparing young people for the global economy; and student recognition programs as the issues they will study. The students will report their findings and recommendations to the board in the spring.
- SPECIAL EDUCATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING
The York County School Division Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) will meet on Thursday, January 15, at 7 p.m. at the divisions School Board Office, 302 Dare Road. SEAC meetings include presentations on relevant special education topics and a public comment period. For more information on SEAC, please call 898-0308.
- YCSD SCIENCE FAIR ANNOUNCED
The York County School Division Science Fair will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at the Grafton School complex, 405 Grafton Drive. Public viewing of the exhibits will begin at 7:15 p.m. and the awards ceremony will begin at 8 p.m.
- TWO YCSD TEACHERS EARN NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION
Lori Anderson, a teacher a Grafton High School, and Laura Nester, a teacher at York High School, recently earned National Board Certification. In addition, Elizabeth OBrien, a teacher at Grafton High School, successfully renewed her certification.
National Board Certification, offered by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, is a way to recognize the accomplished teachers that occurs in classrooms. The certification process is based on high and rigorous standards that evaluate teaching practice through performance-based assessments. The ultimate result is improved performance and achievement for teachers. - YCSD UPDATES FOR THE FY10 OPERATING BUDGET
- BETHEL MANOR STUDENTS COLLECT COATS FOR NEEDY
The Student Council Association recently collected more than 100 new and gently used coats to distribute to needy families. The school donated the coats to Denbigh Presbyterian Church to help local area children stay warm during the holiday season.
- HOLIDAY EXCITEMENT AT SEAFORD ELEMENTARY
Seaford Elementary's fifth grade classes performed a spirited program entitled "What's That in the Sky?" in anticipation of the upcoming holidays.
- STUDENTS AT MAGRUDER APPLY GEOMETRY
Third grade students at Magruder Elementary School recently applied their study of geometry by creating geometric villages. Their villages were inspired by the book “The Village of Round and Square Houses.”
- BIG HEARTS AT SEAFORD ELEMENTARY
Seaford Elementary students showed a great deal of heart by jump roping in the annual Jump Rope for Heart fund raiser for the American Heart Association. Students raised more than $5,200 to support heart research and programs.
- CAMOUFLAGE AND GEOMETRY AT GRAFTON BETHEL
Third grade students at Grafton Bethel Elementary School recently studied camouflage and geometric shapes. In science students were studying camouflage as a physical adaptation that allows animals to defend themselves. Students decided which fabric (environment) best camouflaged their butterfly. In math class students used geometric shapes to create various animals as they analyzed the shapes and identified properties.
- REFLECTIONS CONTEST WINNERS AT QUEENS LAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL
Queens Lake Middle School is pleases to announce the following winners of the 2008-2009 PTA Reflections Contest. These students were chosen from over 70 entries in the categories of Literature, Visual Arts, and Photography. All first place winners were sent on to be judged at the county level and those winners will be announced at a later date.
