- Eagles rout Northwest
A year ago, the Maize boys basketball team was limited athletically, which forced them to play a more methodical, fundamentally-sound style that led to some low-scoring affairs.
Coach Chris Grill drastically changed his philosophy this season, and there was no greater example of the Eagles' new, up-tempo system than their 78-49 victory Saturday night over Northwest in which Maize forced 26 turnovers and shot 51 percent.
"As long as we stay focused with the purpose in our defensive pressure, then we can get away with wearing teams down," Grill said. "I thought we did a good job of taking care of their athleticism early."
Northwest had trouble with Maize's fullcourt press, sometimes not even establishing possession in the frontcourt. Four times, the Grizzlies didn't even get the ball inbounds." Not to take anything away from Maize, because they did a great job tonight, but I really thought our inexperience hurt us," Northwest coach Chris Collins said. "It's the same thing I said earlier in the week, we have a good gameplan, but we just have to trust it. We didn't do that tonight."
Saturday, all 12 Maize players scored, with Tyson Pollard leading three Eagles in double figures with 13 points.
- Record night for McFarland
Derby center Joanna McFarland set school records with 47 points and 31 rebounds to lead the Panthers to a 66-59 overtime win on Saturday at Southeast.
McFarland's 47 points broke her own school record of 39 set last season against Goddard.
"Joanna just took charge," Derby coach Jessica Stuhlsatz said. "We were having a hard time getting the ball down the court, but once we got the ball inside to her she really took care of business."
Jamillah Bonner led Southeast with 26 points.

If anyone thought the Southeast boys basketball team might show some lingering effects of fatigue after its double-overtime win over Bishop Carroll Friday night, Saturday's game against Derby proved otherwise.
The Buffaloes used an 11-2 second-quarter run to put away Derby's upset bid 77-62.
"You have to be ready for the next team on your schedule, no excuses," Southeast coach Carl Taylor said.
The Panthers couldn't have gotten off to a better start when Kasey Miller hit back-to-back three pointers to open the game, giving Derby early momentum and a 6-2 lead.
But for each run the Panthers went on, Southeast had an answer.

With East's lead cut from double figures to four points, junior Randall Rogers came off the bench and ignited the Blue Aces.
Rogers scored 10 consecutive points in the third quarter and the East boys basketball team defeated Hutchinson 60-46 Saturday night at East.
After leading by as many as 13 points in the first half, the Aces (2-1) saw their lead dwindle to four with 5:51 left in the third quarter. That's when Rogers stepped in. He came off the bench and made consecutive three-point shots and then converted consecutive offensive rebounds to extend the lead to nine. Rogers scored 12 of his 14 points in the third quarter.
"I came in and I just felt it," Rogers said. "I was feeding off of Leon (Flowers). He was doing good in the first half and that got me some good looks."
Even with Rogers' third quarter performance , East was not in the clear. Hutch made one more comeback attempt with 5:45 left. The Salt Hawks (0-2) got within five, but East ended the game with a 15-6 run.

There aren't many sophomores that could handle the pressure of being asked to lead their team to victory. Especially when it's against a ranked team two classifications higher.
But Ashia Woods isn't an average sophomore.
Woods scored a game-high 39 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Wichita Collegiate girls basketball team came from behind in the final quarter to pull out a 55-48 win over visiting Andover Central on Friday night. The loss ended Central's 28-game winning streak.
"She's a special talent," Collegiate coach Terrence Phox said of Woods. "It's really amazing the things that she can do, and doing them as a sophomore."
After leading for the entire game,
