- Westrol, Finnegan Team for 40 as Bentley Extends Home Streak, 96-65 over Concordia
WALTHAM, Mass. - Junior guard Jason Westrol (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan HS) and junior forward Lew Finnegan (Lexington/Lexington HS) combined for 40 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and six steals as Bentley University led from the opening basket en route to a 96-65 victory over Concordia University (N.Y.) in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Sunday afternoon at the Dana Center. It was the 41st consecutive home victory for the Falcons, extending the longest current streak in Division II. Bentley improved to 8-3 overall after matching its season-high point total and Concordia dipped to 1-7.Westrol finished with 21 points (for the second straight game), six assists, five rebounds and three steals while Finnegan followed up on his career-best 29-point effort in Monday's win at Saint Rose with 19 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.Bentley used an early 12-2 surge to open a 25-9 lead less than nine minutes into the game, and the differential remained in double digits the rest of the afternoon. Westrol keyed that run, scoring half of the 12 points. The lead stood at 19, 43-24, and Bentley was shooting an amazing 68 percent as a team after Finnegan's basket with 6:47 left in the opening half. The Falcons cooled off the rest of the way (finishing at 55 percent at the half and .492 for the game), but were never seriously threatened. At the break, Bentley owned a 53-35 lead and Finnegan already had 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting, with three treys.Concordia sophomore Samuel Batista (Carolina, P.R.), who led all scorers with 26 points, opened the second with a pair of three-pointers to reduce the Bentley advantage to 12, 53-41. The Falcons answered by netting the next seven points, with sophomore forward Brian Tracey (Bow Mar, Colo./ Heritage HS) responsible for five with a three-ball and a fast-break dunk, and the difference between the two continued to climb the rest of the way.Finnegan, the newest member of Bentley's 1,000-point club, and Westrol, just 24 points away from joining it himself, were two of the Falcons' four double-figure scorers. Tracey came off the bench to contribute 15 points and six rebounds, and junior guard John Brandt (Pawtucket, R.I./Wheeler School) tallied 11 points and four boards, also in a non-starting role.Bentley, which limited Concordia to 38 percent shooting overall and 31 percent in the second half, enjoyed significant advantages in most of the specialty stats. The Falcons outscored the Clippers 30-13 in points off turnovers, were plus-14 in the paint (38-24), scored 14 fast break points while allowing only two, and had a 41-13 edge in bench scoring. Bentley will be back at home on Friday night with a non-conference game against Bloomfield College (7:00). - Bentley Returns Home to Host Concordia Sunday
WALTHAM, Mass. - After three straight contests away from home, the Bentley University men's basketball team will play its first home game in 19 days Sunday afternoon when it takes on Concordia University. Tip-off is slated for 2 pm.Bentley, which dropped out of the top 25 this week after being included in the previous 30 polls, is coming off an impressive78-51 win at Saint Rose Monday. That came only a little more than 48 hours after a disappointing 70-61 road loss to New Haven. Bentley, 7-3 thus far this year after winning 66 of 68 games during the previous two seasons combined, features the talented duo of senior Lew Finnegan (Lexington/Lexington HS) and junior Jason Westrol (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan HS), two of the top seven scorers in the Northeast-10.Monday was a career night for Falcon senior Lew Finnegan. All he did was become the 44th member of Bentley's 1,000-point club, net a career-best 29 points (which boosted his season scoring average to 16.0) and tie the single game school record for three-pointers, burying eight. Westrol, who had 21 at Saint Rose, is the second-leading scorer in the NE-10, averaging 18.6 a game. He's closing in on the 1,000-point mark himself, needing 45 more to become the 45th in school history, and is the team leader in both assists (33) and steals (17).Bentley, in Sunday's game, will be looking to extend the nation's longest home winning streak in Division II to 41.The encounter with the Falcons will be Concordia's second in about 20 hours, with the Clippers having begun a string of eight straight road games Saturday night with a 65-43 loss at Stonehill. Concordia is currently 1-6, although the three losses before Saturday were decided by a total of just ten points. The Clippers, who'll be facing Bentley for the first time in a decade, will have a height advantage over the Falcons with players 6-foot-7 and 6-foot-9 in the starting lineup and a seven-foot freshman coming off the bench. William Easton, a 6-foot-9 sophomore, averages a double-double, and six-foot-seven Dan Cunningham registers 8.3 points and 8.8 boards a game.Bentley will also be at home next Friday night with Bloomfield College providing the opposition. - Darcy Finishes 2nd in 800 at Harvard Open
