Maine East returns core from last season
Maine East second-year head coach Glenn Olson has to be hoping his players have a vivid memory of last season. Under the guidance of Olson and the talents of a number of athletes, East made a bit of school history in February. -
Wolves, Loyd exploding out of the gate
Jewell Loyd made her debut last week for the Niles West girls basketball team. The highly touted vampire movie, "Twilight," also was available to see for the first time. Guess which one's drawing the most rave reviews? -
Czyzewski qualifies for Junior Nationals
Ola Czyzewski of Glenview hopes to make a name for herself in figuring skating on the same ice where one of the sports worlds biggest stories occurred 28 years ago. Czyzewski, a 15-year-old freshman at Glenbrook South, has advanced to the Junior National Championships, which will be held at Lake Placid, N.Y., Dec. 11-13. -
Harmon provides North with spark off bench
Nancy Harmon, a 5-foot-9 junior guard, came off the bench in the Vikings' game against Wheeling on Saturday to pop in eight points -- on three field goals and two free throws in two tries. She started her stretch by making two assists and getting back-to-back baskets in the second quarter. -
Big crowd sees Notre Dame fall to rival Maine
The Notre Dame Ice Dons were defeated by Maine Township 3-1 Nov. 18 before an unbelievably large and exuberant crowd from both schools that was estimated at more than 500 people. -
Scoring surge drives Ramblers to Prep Bowl
Falling short on its main goal of making a deep run in the IHSA Class 8A playoffs, Loyola Academy got a nice consolation prize. The Ramblers scored points on five straight possessions to win their second straight game, defeating Chicago De La Salle, 23-7, Saturday afternoon in the Chicago Catholic League playoffs. With the win, the Ramblers advance to the Prep Bowl Friday at Soldier Field. -
West shatters six school records in sectional
By landing top-five finishes in diving and earning at-large berths, Jasmine Ramahi and Emily Fung made a little school history during Saturday's New Trier Sectional. Only once before has the program sent two divers to the IHSA state finals at the same time. But that diving success only tells part of the story. -
Loyd gives Wolves something to howl about
There hasn't been this kind of a buzz in the hallways at Niles West about the start of the girls basketball season since West won the state championship back in 1979. But anyone who's seen Jewell Loyd play so far has the feeling that having the 5-foot-9 freshman in a Wolves uniform could be the start of something big. -
New Demons coach Hanusiak brings fresh start
The task of turning a sports program around is never an easy one. But with a fair amount of talent and her objectives clearly planned out, Karol Hanusiak hopes to launch a new era of girls basketball at Maine East. -
North plans family style menu for 2008-09
After enduring a 3-27 season under new coach Dan Paxson in 2007-08, Niles North has adopted a family theme for the 2008-09 campaign. Obviously, it's not the first time a high school team has bonded into a family unit, but for the Vikings, family has a special meaning. -
Scoring outburst carries Loyola over St. Laurence
Getting a second life with the Chicago Catholic League playoffs, Loyola Academy had several players take advantage of the extra opportunity. The Ramblers scored 14 points in the third quarter to dismantle St. Laurence 28-6 in the semifinals Saturday afternoon. -
Ramblers to face De La Salle in finals
Smash-mouth football is what usually scores wins for high school teams in November. That's just what Loyola Academy will be up against at noon Saturday when the Ramblers (9-3) host an 8-4 De La Salle team. -
North looks ahead after season ends in sectional
Niles North's performance at the New Trier Sectional ended with mix reviews. "Some girls swam really well, while others didn't do as well as before," said head coach Paul Torres. "We did better at conference [the CSL North meet] than we did [Saturday]. Overall, I would say the season was a success. -
Niles West boys basketball at a glance
The star system -- with the transfer of leading scorer Nik Garcia to Evanston -- is being replaced by a team approach with every player working together on the same page. -
Niles North at a glance
Coach Dan Paxson took over a team that hit rock bottom in 2007-08. With five seniors and one junior returning, Paxson will have a team that went through a lot of hardship last season, but gained valuable experience. -
Zasso makes big leap in second shot at State
Considering the location of his starting box -- at the extreme end of the line -- Alex Zasso knew ahead of time that he couldn't expect to get out quickly at the IHSA Class 3A state finals at Detweiller Park in Peoria. But once he escaped the traffic jam on the first turn, Zasso was at his best. -
Loyola falls short against mighty Maine South
Holding offensive juggernaut Maine South to about half of its usual point-total was of little consolation to Loyola Academy on Saturday. The No. 2 Hawks (11-0), who came in averaging 49.8 points per game, controlled the visiting No. 7 Ramblers (8-3) 26-7 in a frigid (18-degree wind-chill factor) IHSA Class 8A second-round contest. -
Loyola's Composto takes sixth at State
Nico Composto ran the race of his life on Saturday. And his future will only get better. The Loyola Academy junior finished sixth during the IHSA Class 3A finals in Peoria, the highest finish for a non-senior in the whole meet. His time of 14 minutes, 32 seconds was a personal-best, and he became the first Rambler to place that high at State. -
West divers make splash in conference meet
Niles West's swimmers and divers combined to win the meet within the meet -- the head-to-head competition with Maine South -- during Saturday's Central Suburban League South championship showdown at New Trier. -
Vikings deliver solid results in league meet
A small contingent represented Niles North at the CSL North conference meet, but what an impact this group of hungry girls made for coach Paul Torres. Torres brought only nine swimmers to Glenbrook North on Saturday, but these nine performed so well that the Vikings still finished fourth in the team standings with 137 points. -
